FOR HYPER-INDEPENDENT WOMEN HEALING ATTACHMENT TRAUMA

You've probably done a couple years of therapy in San Francisco already.

Maybe someone in Pacific Heights. Maybe an office near the Embarcadero that came highly recommended. You did the work. You liked the person. And after two years, you could explain every pattern clearly, and your body was still doing the same thing on the ride home.

This page is for women in San Francisco who’ve already tried the local option, done the reading, and are ready for a different structure. Not necessarily a different therapist. A different container for the depth of what you’re carrying.

WHY ONLINE WORKS FOR THIS

Online EMDR therapy in San Francisco is not a compromise. It's a better fit.

You already have a full life running on San Francisco time. School drop-offs across the Richmond, Sunset, or Noe Valley. Meetings downtown, in SoMa, or across the Bay. Getting to an in-person therapist in Pacific Heights or near Union Square takes more than the length of the session once you account for Muni, parking, hills, or bridge traffic. Online EMDR therapy and intensives remove that transition. You do the work from your own home, in a space your nervous system already knows.

There’s a clinical consideration too. The purpose of an intensive is to have sustained time inside the work. Adding a commute on either end of a five-hour processing day is another transition for your mind and body to manage. Working from home gives you space to rest, reflect, and settle afterward instead of stepping onto Muni or navigating traffic while everything still feels close to the surface.

Online is how San Francisco women actually integrate this work.

THE WORK I DO

Multi-day EMDR intensives designed for attachment trauma

Every intensive moves through a structured arc: preparation sessions before, multi-hour processing days in the middle, and integration sessions after. The whole thing is built for women whose insight has plateaued and whose bodies still haven't caught up. If you want the full picture of how the sessions are structured, what an intensive week looks like, and what the investment covers, that's all on the intensives page.

WHO I WORK WITH IN SAN FRANCISCO INTENSIVES

The patterns I treat

Attachment trauma shows up in different patterns for different women. These are the five I see most often in San Diego clients. Any one of these can be the door you walk through to the deeper work.

When you're still stuck after years of therapy

You've probably worked with someone well-known in San Francisco already. Maybe two of them. You're not looking for a better therapist. You're looking for a different kind of work, because you already know what you know and your body still hasn't caught up.

Childhood that looked fine from the outside

The families that produced San Francisco's most capable professionals often looked completely fine from the outside. Good schools, good vacations, present parents. What was missing was harder to name, and you've been carrying the shape of it your whole adult life.

The cost of being the strong one

San Francisco hyper-independence has a specific shape. You're the woman who manages your household, your team, and your parents' aging health care from your home office. You're extraordinarily good at it. Your body is exhausted.

People-pleasing and the lost self

You've spent years in rooms where reading other people well was the entire job. You've gotten so good at it that when someone asks what you want, you have no idea. The competence didn't come free. What it cost you is access to yourself.

Anxiety that won't quiet down

The San Francisco version of chronic anxiety is the one that shows up before your first meeting and doesn't leave. You look composed. You perform composure. Your nervous system has been on watch since you were nine and has never gotten the signal to stand down.

Most San Francisco clients work on more than one of these in the same intensive.

WHAT WOMEN IN SAN FRANCISCO OFTEN ASK

Questions about EMDR therapy in San Francisco

What's the difference between weekly EMDR and an EMDR intensive?

Weekly EMDR uses fifty-minute sessions once a week. An EMDR intensive uses multi-hour sessions across a few consecutive days. Olivia Lavelle offers 15-hour and 30-hour intensives designed specifically for clients whose nervous systems need sustained processing time rather than weekly increments. The intensive format was developed for complex or attachment-rooted trauma that weekly sessions struggle to fully move.

Can I do an EMDR intensive while staying with my current therapist?

Yes. Most of Olivia Lavelle's San Francisco clients continue seeing their weekly therapist during and after the intensive. The intensive gives focused, sustained work that you can then bring back to your existing therapist with different material to work with. You do not need to end an existing therapeutic relationship to do an intensive.

Is online EMDR as effective as in-person for attachment trauma?

Yes. Research on virtual EMDR consistently shows comparable outcomes to in-person work when delivered by a trained clinician using a clinically validated platform. For attachment trauma specifically, doing the work from your own home can support the nervous system in a way an unfamiliar office cannot. Olivia Lavelle's practice is fully online across California.

How do I know if I need an EMDR intensive or weekly therapy?

If you've done years of weekly therapy and understand your patterns but your body still reacts the same way, an intensive is likely a better fit than more weekly sessions. If you're at the beginning of your therapeutic work or in active crisis, weekly therapy is usually the right starting point. Olivia Lavelle offers free 20-minute consultations to help you figure out which is right for your specific situation.

San Francisco has some excellent therapists. If you're on this page, it's usually not because you couldn't find one. It's because you found one and it still wasn't enough. That's not a failure of therapy. It's a signal that your nervous system needs a different structure. That's what an intensive offers.
